Obituary: on 17 January 2021: Maria Chetcuti, March 5, 1925 – January 12, 2021 -- It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Maria, at the age of 95. Born in Malta she was the beloved wife of the late Simon Chetcuti. She was preceded in death by her brothers Joe, Manuel and John and her sisters Lucy and Connie. She was a member of the Church of the Visitacion, their Mothers' Club and Over 55 Club as well as the Maltese American Social Club and the Italian American Federation. Maria loved to cook, travel and try new things. She was dedicated to her church, community and those in need.She leaves behind her children May (Sue) and George (Lana), sister Carmen (Charles) and her grandchildren; Alexis (Austin) and Matthew (Victoria) and many nieces, nephews and so many other friends and those whose lives she touched. Maria Busuttil was also known as Mary Chetcuti.

Maria was born on April 11, 1924 in Mosta, Malta, Europe. She was the oldest daughter of Emmanuel and Rosa Grech and one of eleven siblings (the late Charlie Grech, Percy Grech, Rita Mallia, Frances Pardi, Josie Corso, Ben Grech, the late Joe Grech, Theresa Muscat, Victor Grech and Reno Grech). She immigrated to the United States (San Francisco) in 1958 and met Paul Chetcuti, they married in 1962 and had their only daughter, Theresa in 1963. Maria was a homemaker for many years and had a wonderful life in San Francisco. She was an amazing seamstress, loved to garden, and loved to cook - she made the BEST pastizzi this side of Malta! She was devoted to her Catholic faith and loved her family more than anything in the world. Theresa married Steve Cardona in 1986 and they had two children, Ryan (1988) and Samantha (1991). In 1994, Maria's loving husband Paul passed away. Steve and Theresa relocated to El Dorado Hills in 1997 and Maria moved in with them in 1998. Although she missed her beloved San Francisco, her best days were spent helping to raise her grandkids, Ryan and Samantha, the loves of her life. In 2009, Maria suffered a heart attack with congestive heart failure, and was put on Hospice Care at New West Haven in Cameron Park, CA. The wonderful caregivers there Dena, Tricia, Alicia, Brandy, Dale, and Judy; as well as the Hospice caregivers, Dominique, Trudy, John, and Cheryl made it possible for Maria to spend her last years well taken care of in a loving environment. Also, many thanks to Teresa from Holy Trinity for bringing Eucharist on Sundays. Maria is survived by her daughter Theresa, son in law Steve, grandchildren Ryan and Samantha; brothers, sisters, brother in laws, sister in laws, nieces, nephews, and many friends. She will be missed by many but never forgotten.
